Who is Using the Kitchen?
When you are designing the layout of your kitchen, who lives in your home and the style of the home will have a major influence. Think about who will be using the kitchen primarily – the elderly, children, a single person, a family, and so on. The size of the kitchen will also dictate the type of things you can include in your kitchen – a small kitchen will need clever kitchen storage solutions, for example, while a large kitchen may benefit from an island.
The Sink and Dishwasher
Think about where you will put the sink and the dishwasher. A good place for the sink is on an exterior wall if at all possible. This will make plumbing easier and you will also benefit from the natural light given by the windows. You will also get a view when washing dishes or loading and unloading the dishwasher.
Kitchen Storage
Kitchen storage is important, so make sure that you get the placement right. Glasses, crockery, and cutlery storage should all be near the dishwasher, while pots and pans should be close to food preparation areas and the oven or stovetop. Use awkward areas for those necessary but rarely used items.
Food Preparation
Food preparation is the overriding purpose of the kitchen so you need to make sure that you have plenty of space for it. Ensure that you have adequate benchtop space in three main areas – near the oven, near the sink, and near the fridge. The benchtop between the sink and the cooktop/oven should be solely dedicated to food preparation.
Kitchen Seating
Many kitchens do “double duty” in a way, providing seating areas as well as preparing food. Will your kitchen need to fit in a dining table, or will you make use of a breakfast bar? If so, make sure that you have at least 1.2m of clear space between the table or bar and nearby benchtops. This will allow people to sit without getting in the way of someone using the benchtops.
